Township Government Table of Contents

A township is a unit of local government designated by the Illinois Constitution. Its functions include care of the indigent, assessment of property, and maintenance of roads and bridges. The Barrington Area extends into six townships. The legal power of the township rests with the legal voters who attend the town meeting. An annual town meeting is required on the second Tuesday of April. Township elections are held in April in odd numbered years following Presidential elections. Polling places are the same as for general elections. The Township Board consists of the Supervisor and the Trustees; the Town Clerk is a non-voting member.
